Review the step-by-step for every practical skill you might be tested on.

- 1Gather supplies: soap, running water, paper towels.
- 2Wet hands with warm water before applying soap.
- 3Scrub all surfaces of the hands (palms, backs, between fingers, nails) for at least 20 seconds.
- 4Rinse with hands pointed downward.
- 5Dry with a clean paper towel.
- 6Turn off the faucet using the paper towel, not clean hands.
- 1Explain the procedure to the resident.
- 2Place two or three fingers (not the thumb) over the radial artery at the wrist.
- 3Count beats for 30 seconds and multiply by 2 (or 60 seconds if the pulse is irregular).
- 4Record the rate, rhythm, and strength of the pulse.
- 5Report any abnormal value to the nurse.
